abigail williams
The major motive of Abigail Williams is to manipulate John Proctor to repossess the love she had during the affair. In the beginning when the rumour of witches invading the village spreads in Salem. Abigail initiates by focusing on saving her life from the witch-hunt. Out of fear, she manipulates the Supreme Court Judges to save all the girls who danced from the the gallows. However, as Abigail confirms her position as the “Thumb of God,” she seeks revenge against her enemies. Her desire to have John Proctor as her husband leads Abigail to mention Elizabeth Proctor in the court for witchcraft. Even though Abigail only intended to replace Elizabeth’s place with hers, Abigail’s accusation provokes John Proctor to confess the adultery with Abigail. Abigail’s failure to beguile John Proctor and exploit him to satisfy her love, in fact, makes John Proctor, a scapegoat, or the “Devil” to be hanged. Although her fear and lust for love triggered her to revenge against the enemies and fight for her love in Salem witch-trials, Abigail does not accomplish her incentive to reattain John’s love.
