The Crucible
Character analysis
The Crucible takes place in Salem, Massachusetts during the Puritan era. Reverend Parris discovers the local girls dancing, the acts which were considered deplorable and wicked to Puritans. The rumor that the girls were involved with witchcraft quickly spreads. The hysteria not only threatens the girls, but also the villagers who may encounter the “devil” in the village. Abigail William, the selected leader of the girls, denies any complicity in the practice of witchcraft and manipulates the girls to keep the dance secret. Abigail and the other girls accuse other villagers of witchcraft to avoid the death penalty and to revenge against their enemies.
