The Crucible
Thomas putnam
Thomas Putnam, one of the wealthiest landowners in Salem, is a greedy man who can afford to buy anything he wants. He lost seven newborn babies and Ruth is his only child remaining. When Ruth pretends to be sick after the dance in the woods with other girls, he accuses children's illness as witchcraft and doubted that "there is a murderous witch among us". Moreover, throughout the play he is a character who shows great lust for land. Since the amount of land a man owns symbolizes the amount of power, he fancies for more land. He also intentionally use his daughter to put George Jacobs in a jail for witchcraft and succeed in opening Jacobs's land so that he can purchase them. His character shows how people in village were willing to accuse people so easily for their selfish desires.
