John proctor
John Proctor, the protagonist of the Crucible, is a wealthy and well-reputed farmer in the Salem . Prior to the play, John Proctor committed an adultery with Abigail Williams and the tension between his wife, Elizabeth Proctor and John Proctor aggravates. Abigail, jealous of Proctor’s wife, puts Elizabeth Proctor in the witch trials and accuses her of witchcraft in an attempt to regain Proctor’s love. Although at first his motivation of keeping his affair secret was to protect his good name, Proctor admits his sin in the public court in order to save his wife's life. He abandons his good name, but retrieves his integrity to save the whole village from the hysteria. His affair with Abigail becomes a constructive element in changing his attitude not only for his wife, but also for the community. Proctor, as the hero of the play, scarifies his life by hanging himself, refusing to relinquish his good name, and redeeming his integrity.
