The Crucible
forest
The forest in which the girls danced symbolises the land affected by the Communism. Arthur Miller born during the year of McCarthyism which americans feared the adoption of communism on the peripheral of America, depicts the members of communist party in the US government as the girls dancing in the forest with the “devils.” The fear starts from the forest as the townsmen believed “the virgin forest was the Devil’s last preserve” (5). Similarly, the presence of Communist countries such as China, Russia, and Vietnam circling around the US initiates Joseph McCarthy, formal US Senator, to claim the existence of communists in America. The forest represents the encroaching devil’s land in which the “evil” pervades Salem.
