The Crucible
Water
In the film in Crucible, water foreshadows the play and signifies baptism, eternal hope and purification of sinners. When Elizabeth comes back to the court to verify the validity of Proctor of accusing Abigail as a whore, the thunder and heavy rain are used to predict the fall of John’s credibility in the Supreme Court. In spite of his good name in the village, Elizabeth’s false confession to protect John’s reputation leads him to become the man of the accused. Reverend Danforth, Thomas Putnam, and Mary Warren denies his position against the hypocrisy of the girls in the court. All the girls jumps into the muddy water symbolising the wickedness and sin of the hypocrites. However, when the John stands alone in the water, the water becomes pure even though all the puritans except Mr. Hale considers him the Devil. Opening his arm wide as a symbol of Jesus Christ, John says “I think the God is dead.” The water purifies not only John’s sin of committing adultery, but also the villagers by sacrificing his life like Jesus Christ.
